What happened to the dinosaurs?

For over 160 million years, Earth was populated by dinosaurs, making them one of the most successful groups of animals ever to have lived on this planet.

There were meat eating species (such as Tyrannosaurus rex like Stan) and plant eating species. Some were very large, many were smaller than humans. Over a thousand species of dinosaur have been identified from fossil remains, but how did such a successful and diverse group of animals become extinct?
